Penlake Juniors travelled away to Cadishead who finished 3rd in the Premiership the previous season for their first away game of the season. Sporting their brand new kit kindly sponsored by Falcon Car Care, the team were looking to give a performance the sleek new kits deserved. With a full squad to choose from the manager chose to shuffle his squad about and set the team up to deal with the oppositions threats.
Penlake started very brightly and kept possession really well with some excellent pass and move football. Probing at every opportunity but Cadishead were particularly strong at the back with 4 rather large and fast defenders who worked tirelessly to keep Penlake’s vibrant attackers under control. Penlake went behind 1-0 against the run of play after a 40 yard shot deceived the Penlake goalkeeper and nestled in the back of the net. Penlake were soon back on level terms as their increased possession allowed them to build up the pressure on the opposition, as Alex Stotts hard work and persistence was rewarded with a goal. Cadishead were always dangerous on the counter attack with the majority of their attacks however being snuffed out by Penlakes back four, until a mis placed pass allowed cadishead to take the lead not long before half time.
Penlake came out for the second half still playing their free flowing football and were rewarded with 3 fantastic goals in the second half to run out eventual winners 4-2.
1) Jack Field – 8 Not an awful lot to do during the game, apart from commanding his area. Was deceived by the ball travelling on the first goal but never let his head go down and was straight back into the game 2) Craig Leadbetter – 9 Inspired performance as he was always available as an outlet to start the ball moving forward and defended solidly 3) Charlie Burdekin – 8 ½ Excellent performance at full back as he had his first start for the club. Distributed the ball well and worked hard throughout 4) John Cunliffe – 9 ½ Exceptional performance throughout as he dominated the oppositions forwards 5) Jordan Pilling – 9 apart from the loose pass for the second goal he was outstanding throughout as he dominated in the air and was calm and cool with the ball at his feet 6) Jordi Smith – 9 The manager asked a lot of his midfielders on a very long pitch but they worked tirelessly and dominated in midfield 7) Kane Grant – 9 Kept the ball moving and was involved in most attacking moves 8) Luke Watkin – 9 ½ Worked so hard and was solid in the tackle. A great tackle and pass to set up a goal. 9) Alex Stott – 9 ½ deserved his hat trick with some really hard work and skill and his persistence paid off against a very good defence. 10) Jordan Wright – 9 worked very hard and had a good battle with the oppositions defence and was rewarded with an excellent goal 11) Danny Gerrard – 8 One of his quieter games offensively but worked hard and defended excellently. Subs: 12) Tom Davies – 9 was asked to do a job in the second half and was inspirational in securing the victory as Penlake won the second half 3-0!! 13) Harry Caton – 9 did an excellent job and with some flashes of brilliance was able to keep his opposite number on the back foot 14) Oscar Billington – 8 ½ worked hard to keep the lead in-tact, with some excellent tackles and good distribution. 15) Cam Tunstall – 9 Played in two different positions and defended excellently, committed to the cause as always, with some excellent runs 16) Ryan Roberts – 9 carried on where Charlie left off at full back with some good distribution down the left |
